The Dolphins will be saying goodbye to one of our most popular players this year after Nick Slyney informed the Club that he is drawing the curtain on his sterling career.
The workhorse front rower will be hard to replace not only on the field but also around the dressing rooms. Nick has had an exceptional career having achieved the dream of playing first grade rugby league in the NRL when he debuted for the North Queensland Cowboys in 2008. He also won the first of his two Intrust Super Cup Premierships while at the Cowboys affiliate, the Northern Pride.
To add to his NRL tally, he played 6 games for the Brisbane Broncos before heading to England and Super League. Despite injury he still managed almost 60 games for the London Broncos before returning to the Dolphins in 2017 to collect his second Peter Leis Medal as the Player of the Year.
Injury again struck in 2018 and forced him to look on for most of the early rounds. A rehabilitation period characterised by hard work and determination allowed Nick to re-join the squad for the remaining quarter of the season, where his experience and calm temperament helped the Dolphins win the competition against the Easts Tigers at Suncorp Stadium.
General Manager of Football Grant Cleal said Nick’s contribution to the Dolphins has been immense. “Nick has been a great leader at the Club and the type of player who makes others be the best they can be. We want to thank Nick for everything he has done for the Club and wish him and his wife Shannon the very best of luck for their life outside football, which includes welcoming their first child later this year.”
