Gutsy Dolphins fall short in preliminary final heartbreak
A brave Redcliffe Dolphins outfit has fallen just short of back-to-back grand final appearances, after they were unable to stop a last-minute Burleigh Bears resurgence in Saturday’s preliminary final showdown.
In heartbreaking scenes, the Dolphins – who led for the majority of the match – leaked 12 points in the final seven minutes to go down 18-16 at UAA Park.
Redcliffe had to overcome plenty of adversity throughout, including the loss of second rower Jaron Purcell (head knock) and winger Will Dobson (leg) – plus a sin bin to fullback Zac Miles in the first half – but their resilience was admirable as they maintained their lead over the minor premiers.
But the experienced and determined Bears proved to be too strong in the end.
The Dolphins got on the board early with a penalty goal to Will Partridge in the 5th minute.
They then earned their first try just five minutes later, as prop Tray Lolesio found a gap to barge his way over the line.
Redcliffe then went on a roll when, in the 23rd minute, there was a beautiful cut out pass from Miles to Dobson, who powered past the defence to score.
But from here it was an uphill battle for the Dolphins as injuries and penalties started to take their toll.
Redcliffe had two tries denied to Dobson and centre Partridge and also saw Jack Johnson and Karl Oloapu be put on report, alongside Miles.
While they had another penalty goal in the second half, their efforts were just not enough against the Bears, who progress to next Saturday’s grand final.
However, the Dolphins players can hold their heads high after a strong, gutsy performance and an overall impressive 2025 season.
