Redcliffe bounce back against bayside rivals

The Redcliffe Dolphins have wasted no time in returning to the Hostplus Cup winner’s circle, putting last week’s loss behind them to notch up a commanding 34-10 victory over the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

The Dolphins remain in second place on the competition ladder, with Sunday’s Round 15 win over their bayside rivals at Kayo Stadium their ninth of the season.

While Wynnum Manly were first on the board – scoring through winger Alex Lobb in the 6th minute – Redcliffe were a team on a mission and barely took a backwards steps as they raced in six tries to two.

The first points for the Dolphins came in the 24th minute when Dom De Stradis barged his way over. The floodgates opened from here, with halfback Joshua James scoring off a Steven Numambo kick, following some impressive play along the right edge.

Now in the lead, Redcliffe were firing on all cylinders and LJ Nonu became the next to cross, this time in the left corner off a Sheldon Pitama cut-out pass in the 35th minute.

Redcliffe went into the break up 18-6.

They were quick to regain momentum in the second stanza, taking only seven minutes to score their next try.

This time it was centre Jude Saldanha, who pounced on a Kyle Coghill kick to extend the lead.

Twelve minutes later, Redcliffe were in again as James scooped up a loose ball from Wynnum Manly and raced nearly 60 metres to score.

The final Redcliffe try came through NRL affiliate Jake Averillo who is on the comeback trail from a hand injury.

Averillo was put through a gap by fullback Trai Fuller, and continued to slice his way through the Seagulls’ defence to seal the deal for Redcliffe.

Wynnum Manly earned a late consolation try through the Lobb.

Redcliffe will now turn their attention to Souths Logan Magpies next Sunday at Davies Park in West End.
