Redcliffe remain undefeated in Liam Hampson Cup

The Redcliffe Dolphins remain undefeated in the Liam Hampson Cup, sitting 4-0 over their Tweed rivals in the significant annual match.

Going into the game having won the past three Hampo Cup meetings – played in honour of former Redcliffe and Tweed Seagulls player Hampson, who tragically passed in 2022 – the Dolphins wanted to pay tribute to their mate.

And they would have made him proud, claiming a 30-12 victory on home turf at Kayo Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The try-scoring in the Round 22 clash opened through Josh James, who crossed under the posts with a beautiful chip and chase to himself in the 5th minute.

Backrower Dom De Stradis then extended that lead in the 23rd minute after Brent Woolf offloaded to Jordan Plath and, through quick hands, the ball went to five-eighth Jake Averillo and then to De Stradis.

Redcliffe went into the halftime break up 12-8, with Tweed scoring in the 35th minute.

Tweed then came into the second half firing fast, tying the match up at 12-all in the 47th.

But Redcliffe were on a mission to win for Hampson and showed plenty of grit to fight their way back to the lead.

Will Boland earned his first try at the Hostplus Cup level, with the centre collecting a Brad Schneider kick to score on the Dolphins’ right edge.

Three minutes later, a runaway Trai Fuller broke through Tweed’s defence and with a flying De Stradis, the backrower nabbed his second.

The finishing touches came in style in the 75th minute when centre Jude Saldanha intercepted and raced away to seal the match at 30-12.

While the result helps keep Redcliffe in the top two with one week left before finals, it had a lot more meaning for the playing group and club as a whole.

The Dolphins will finish their home-and-away season next week at home when they take on the Western Clydesdales on Sunday 30 August.
